It was 9th grade and my National Junior Honor Society was working hard to raise money for a trip to Washington, D.C. Our Sponsor and Teacher, Ms. Elsky, offered the idea to us and our parents and we excitedly accepted. In order for all of us to go, we needed to do several different things to fundraise.

We had all kinds of ideas. There was selling candy, car washes and a huge garage sale at our school. The fun part of the hard work was working toward an exciting goal - together. It wasn't easy, but we were successful and it wasn't because of us alone. We had such a great support system from our parents and our NJHS Sponsors and Teachers. How blessed we were and I know we were aware of it.

Our eager group ventured on to Washington, D.C. These enthusiastic teenagers trekked the stunning streets of this beautiful territory. History came alive as we toured the Capitol Building, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Arlington Cemetery, and so much more. A highlight for me was the breathtaking experience at Mt. Vernon - George Washington's home, as well as, Monticello - the home of Thomas Jefferson. Another great memory was the awesome adventure we had at Williamsburg.

I still have my photo album with various pictures. From the beginning with the garage sale at our school, to the bus ride, to the amazing tour sites and with so many of my incredible school friends that I cherish after all these years. What a treasure to me to have a snapshot of our nation from a special time in my life. I love my country. Reminiscing of this trip enhances the gratitude and respect I hold for America.

As we celebrate the birthday of our precious country today - I obviously reflect on my own heart for patriotism and how this particular opportunity in my life molded, complimented, and enhanced that part of me. It has only grown through the years because of other important aspects of my life that I hold dear. I can only say that this trip to our nation's Capitol at this pivotal stage on my journey is one that dramatically impacted me and in multiple ways.

Watching the adults in our world pour into us and care the way they did was a huge piece of this trip and contributed to who I became. The enjoyment of camaraderie with my friends through the work we did in NJHS and raising the funds for us to participate in this meaningful excursion, still resides within me. Additionally, I stay in awe of those who gave so much to lay the foundation of this magnificent country. Further still, I don't take for granted and have great admiration for the many lives willing to serve and die for the freedom our country knows.

Today, I hope you find a memory from along your path that ignites thankfulness and appreciation for what was and what is today - the birthday of our beloved country. If you do not have such a time to ponder, my prayer is that you make one for yourself and for those to follow you. We have a huge responsibility to do just as the my incredible parents did, along with the wonderful parents and teachers in my treasured NJHS group - encourage knowledge, education, and experience of our great nation. Too many humans made a monumental and sacrificial way for you and me to know such a blessing as The United States of America - I pray we continue it, friend!

May we thank God for His goodness and mercy on the founding of our country and the 249 years to follow. May we pray for His protection, wisdom, and guidance for years to come. May it be that America continues to say, "IN GOD WE TRUST!"

I pray God's best for America and for you. Be blessed, dear Reader, and remember - Jesus loves you so.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AMERICA!
